History — A little bit about the history of Fly-Fishing

Archaeologists believe that the fishing hook was discovered sometime around 30,000 years ago in southern Europe. The hooks, which were eventually provided with barbs, were first manufactured of bone and probably different wooden materials...

The Macedonians 7000 and 3500 BC "fastened red wool around a hook, and fixed onto the wool two feathers which grew under a cock's wattles, and which in colour are like wax. Their rod is six feet long, and their line is the same length. Then they throw their snare, and the fish, attracted and maddened by the colour, comes straight at it, thinking from the pretty sight to gain a dainty mouthful; when, however, it opens its jaws, it is caught by the hook, and enjoys a bitter repast, a captive." These feather creations presumably were more reminiscent of today's jigs than of flies, but we have no reason to doubt their fishing ability. Although they probably fished mainly for their daily food, which does not mean that the Macedonians did not find pleasure in fishing with a rod and flies.

From ancient Egyptian copper hooks dating to 2600 B.C. and the first recordings of catch-and-release fishing in China's Zhou dynasty (11th century BC to 771 BC)

In 200 AD the Roman Claudius Aelianus, his book On the Nature of Animals, described how people fished with a fly in the river Astracus in Macedonia. The prey is presumed to have been trout, since it had a "spotted exterior ".

Much, Much later, when fly-fishing spread to the United States and the Scandinavian countries, it lost its elitist connections. The anglers became more innovative and more willing to try different means and methods. Although at first fly-fishing was used mostly for catching trout out of small streams, it gradually expanded into river and lake fishing. There are people now who are devoted to catching as many different species as possible using flies. Fly-fishing has also spread to the salt-water arena. Fly-fishing is now used for all spices of game fish all over the world.
